April 11, 2010 in Resources by admin

  • This is a guest post written by Thomas.
    The Co-Founder of ZykeCMS.

As you will all now, choosing the right Content Management System (CMS) is an essential element in becoming a successful web developer. With hundreds to choose from it can be a nightmare knowing which one could be right for you. We often get asked about the best ones to select and when we come across a new resource that looks like it has potential, we like to see our readers try it out and give us feedback.

    ZykeCMS

    ZykeCMS | Next Generation CMS

    What is a CMS?
It is a Web application that uses a central database, such as MySQL, to create, edit and store content in a simple way. An administration panel is then used to edit the content in the “backend” which is then displayed to normal visitors on the “frontend”.

    Why use a CMS?
There are various reasons why you may choose to use a CMS, but the primary reason cited is to make the creation and editing of content simple. Depending on the purpose of your project, you may need to use a different CMS each time – so it is vital to understand the needs of your project before deciding. If you are creating a site on behalf of a client, a CMS can be essential. Most clients will have little to no coding knowledge, so the ability for them to edit content with the click of a button is extremely beneficial.

Okay, I want a light-weight, simple CMS to use..
Most of you probably already use Wordpress, Joomla or Drupal for your projects, but there’s an interesting new CMS for you to try: ZykeCMS.

Zyke is newly launched and as such is still at V1.0, but here are just a few of the features for you to try:

    • Light and quick installation process
    • Easy to Administrate
    • High Security
    • Easy to add pages and posts
    • Simple text editor with no need for HTML knowledge
    • Change layout of page with ease
    • Optimized for speed with no bulky coding

Zyke is a free, open-source CMS which means you can help develop the product as you build and learn about the code. The Zyke developer community is where the owners hang out and ask for any feedback. Much like any other open-source software, if you have any suggestions, improvements or ideas – you are free to build them and offer them in the forums to the users. Being a new launch, if you get in today you could soon become one of the lead developers and come widely respected in the community – a great opportunity for the up-and-coming Web developers among you!
It’s definitely one to try and add to your developer’s toolbox. It looks perfect for those of you who need to build sites quickly and easily. Download it free here and don’t forget to give feedback.

Paid Links : Is That a Good Idea?

April 11, 2010 in Resources by admin

  • Google’s Matt Cutts recently made a new announcement about paid links. Buying links is a very hot and controversial topic among webmasters. Should you buy links to increase the position of your website on Google? Do paid links help your rankings? Are there any risks?

    SERP Graph for Backlinks

    SERP Graph for Backlinks

Can you increase your website rankings by buying links?
Yes, you can. Links that point to your website are the most important factor that influences the position of your website in Google’s search results.

If you buy backlinks, you can quickly get high rankings for your website on Google. However, that’s only one side of the medal.

If buying links works, why shouldn’t you use it for your website?
Buying links is against Google’s terms of service: “Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site’s ranking in search results.”

Google’s anti-spam engineer Matt Cutts recently announced that Google has been working on new algorithms and tools to detect paid links.

Google has a report form for paid links. If one of your competitors finds a paid link that points to your website, he might report it to Google.

Google actively searches for paid links and it’s likely that they will detect all paid links sooner or later. While you can get away with them for some time (that’s why paid links work for some time), your website will be penalized as soon as Google finds out that you tried to game the system.

Buying links leads to quick results and strong penalties
If you use spammy SEO methods such as buying links, you will quickly get high rankings on search engines. Unfortunately, Google will completely remove your website from the search results as soon as they find out that you use these methods

If you use ethical SEO methods, it will take longer until you get high search engine rankings. However, your rankings will grow steadily and you’ll get a much better performance in the long run. So, do not use spammy SEO methods to increase your rankings on Google. It will backfire on you.

There are better ways to get inbound links
As mentioned above, the links to your website are the most important factor that influences the position of your website in Google’s search results.

For that reason, it is very important to get as many good backlinks as possible to your website. The quality of the backlinks is more important than the quantity.

You can get links from related websites, links from blogs, links from social bookmark websites, links from Internet directories and more.

How To Avoid Penalty After Being Hacked

April 11, 2010 in Resources by admin

  • This is something that can cause headache for many webmasters. Yes, there’s some search engine penalty if your website got hacked.

It’s increasing day by day and I found some comments on a YouTube video from the webmasters who got hacked recently.

    Hacking

    Hacking

    mfdotcom
I had a site running the previous version of Wordpress where a hacker injected code to show a 301 permanent redirect to the GoogleBot, but normal visitors were not affected and shown the site normally.
It screwed search rankings for awhile, but was fixed soon enough and oddly Google didn’t notice.

    OldWelshGuy
I have seen a few sites that were hacked to serve PRN, and got seriously slapped. down. Many have bounced back real quick 9as we caught them early enough), but others where the site owners didn’t click what the problem was for loss of traffic (and sales) took months.

When a hacker hack a website, they usually put some malicious codes in the source codes of the website. When search engines crawl that page and found that malicious code in the webpage, they treat is as SPAM and threat to the visitors, you get the penalty. This is also applicable if the hacker put some redirection or doorway pages.

What you need to do when you get hacked?
There are some steps that you must take immediately after getting hacked.

    1. Change all your Passwords to something stronger.
    2. Do a Google Safe Browsing Diagnosis to check if Google already picked it up. (Replace the YourDomain.com with your domain)
    3. Scan your website using your hosting control panel.
    4. Clean the website and remove all the unwanted files. If you are using any script, back it up completely along with the databases and delete all the files. Then make a clean reinstall and restore the databases.
    5. Scan your site again to check if any threats left.
    6. Delete the old Sitemap and generate a new one. Then submit it again.
    7. Place a reconsideration request from the Google Webmaster Tools.

If you clean the website before search engines notice it, you might not receive any penalty. But, if you are late, you’ll have it. Below is a video from Matt Cutts on the penalty that you may receive for getting hacked.

How to Compress Webpages to Load Faster

April 11, 2010 in Resources by admin

  • Webpages that loads faster in browsers not only improves user experience, but also helps you in getting a better position in Search Engines. Since the Google Caffeine is rolling out pretty fast in all the Google Datacenters, the page load speed getting more importance along with other SEO tricks. The Google guy Matt Cutts already mentioned this is some videos and interviews. Compressing a page also reduces the bandwidth uses up to 70% to 80% thus cutting down the page load time and server costs while taking very little resource from server.

    HTTP Compression Ratio

    HTTP Compression Ratio

There are several methods that you can use to compress the pages. I’ll just tell you 3 easiest yet best methods that I use on my websites and blogs.

    1. cPanel Compression
If you are using Linux Hosting and cPanel, there’s a builtin option to compress output. The option should be under “Software/Services” as Optimize Website.

      cPanel Optimize Website

      cPanel Optimize Website

Click on it and you’ll get three options.

      • Disabled: Choose this if you do not want cPanel to compress any output. (A very bad idea indeed)
      • Compress All Content : Choose this if you want cPanel to compress all the content before sending to visitor’s browsers. Remember, this may cause a problem to display images properly and you should not use it if you offer downloads of compressed files such as ZIP, RAR, TAR etc.
      • Compress The Specified MIME Types : Perhaps the best option we can get. It’ll compress files types that we choose. In most of the cases, we just need to compress the HTML, XML, PHP, CSS and Javascript files. So, we will put the MIME Types of those files here separated by space. For example “text/html text/plain text/xml text/css application/javascript” will do in most cases. You can customize it according to your needs.

Click on “Update Settings” and your contents are now compressed to load faster in browsers.

    2. PHP Cpmpression
There are several hosts who uses their own custom Hosting Control Panel (Like, GoDaddy, DreamHost, Bluehost, Hostgator). You may or may not find any setting to compress the output. This is where PHP Compression comes handy. Please note, you can compress only PHP files by using this method. If you have HTML files, you can rename that to PHP to make it work.

You need to edit each file you want to compress and add the below mentioned code at Line 1. (Before DOCTYPE)

      • <?php if (substr_count($_SERVER['HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING'], ‘gzip’)) ob_start(“ob_gzhandler”); else ob_start(); ?>

If you have a common header (Like Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal or any scripts), add the line to the top of the header.php file only.

    3. IIS Compression
To compress output of a IIS Server (Windows Hosting), you need to have an Administrator Account. This method is really long and pretty hard to setup. I’d suggest to use PHP Compression if you are hosting a PHP powered website. Here is a very good tutorial on enabling HTTP Compression on IIS 6.0. The method is almost same on IIS 7.0.

    That’s all.

XML Entity Definitions for Characters is a W3C Recommendation

April 11, 2010 in Resources by admin

  • The Math Working Group has published a W3C Recommendation of XML Entity Definitions for Characters. Notation and symbols have proved very important for human communication, especially in scientific documents. Mathematics has grown in part because its notation continually changes toward being succinct and suggestive. On the Web, the majority of cases it is preferable to store characters directly as Unicode character data or as XML numeric character references. This document is the result of years of employing entity names on the Web. It presents a completed listing harmonizing the known uses of character entity names throughout the XML world and Unicode.
