Twitter Buys Tweetie, Kills Off Third Party Apps (For iPhone And iPad)

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • Right after giving their blessing upon the official Blackberry Twitter app (made by RIM), Twitter now has decided to buy Tweetie from AteBits, and releasing it to the masses for free.

Careful analysis of the Twitter user experience in the iTunes AppStore revealed massive room for improvement. People are looking for an app from Twitter, and they’re not finding one. So, they get confused and give up. It’s important that we optimize for user benefit and create an awesome experience.

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve entered into an agreement with Atebits (aka Loren Brichter) to acquire Tweetie, a leading iPhone Twitter client. Tweetie will be renamed Twitter for iPhone and made free (currently $2.99) in the iTunes AppStore in the coming weeks. Loren will become a key member of our mobile team that is already having huge impact with device makers and service providers around the world. Loren’s work won the 2009 Apple Design Award and we will eventually launch Twitter for iPad with his help. (Official Twitter Blog)

Although this is great news for AteBits (whose founder is ecstatic right now), this is horrible news for numerous third party developers (like Echofon, Twittelator, SimplyTweet, and TweetDeck) who may have to join the ranks of the gloriously unemployed in the semi-near future.

A similar scenario happened when Tumblr officially embraced Tumblrette on the iPhone (effectively killing off a number of Tumblr third party apps) and we will probably see deja vu all over again as numerous tweet businesses shut down early or let their apps slowly die on the app store.

This probably also means that we will not see too many Twitter iPad apps in the future as well, as the Tweetie team will be taking over development upon Steve Job’s “greatest creation” (at least until next year).

With Blackberry and the iPhone now having mobile apps anointed or assimilated by Twitter, it may be only a matter of time before we see an official Android app as well.

Blackberry Releases Twitter App In The Wild (Still In Beta)

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • After all but declaring that most Blackberry apps for twitter were horrible, it looks like the BB team is finally unleashing their official twitter app to the world via their beta zone store.

The Blackberry app pretty much boasts features that are considered standard for iPhone Twitter apps (like direct messaging, uploading images, list support, blocking spammers, etc.), although there does not appear to be any support for video uploading (so BB fans will still have to use TwitVid).

Blackberry intends upon launching this app for free (and effectively kill off a few developers as well), and should help them compete against the iPhone whose apps are famous in the twitterverse (especially Echofon, Tweetie and Twittelator).

Get Ready for WordPress 3.0

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • WordPress logoThose of you who actively look at what kind of news is presented to you in your WordPress dashboard already know WordPresss 3.0 beta 1 is released just before the weekend. Even though the actual release of WordPress 3.0 will be at least a couple of weeks away, it’s good to be prepared to the new stuff which WordPress 3.0 will bring to the table.

You of course already knew WordPress 3.0 will be sporting a brand new default theme, named Twenty Ten, but there are quite a few more new features that can improve your WordPress experience. Instead of listing every single feature, I thought it would be nice to make a list of those who already wrote about WordPress 3.0.

Rumor: Squarespace To Develop An iPad App (Still No Word About Android)

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • After launching an elegant iPhone app last year, it looks like the boys and girls at Squarespace are considering creating an iPad app after receiving their brand new iPads a few days ago.

(Squarespace Community) We’ve been asked whether we’re going to be developing an iPad app. I can’t answer that definitively, but I can tell you that we’re extremely impressed with the device and have fallen in love with it here. I wouldn’t be surprised if an iPad app made its way into our roadmap, but like I said I can’t say anything for sure…

Squarespace’s iPad launch would trail that of its rival WordPress, who launched an iPad app at least a day before Apple’s tablet hit the public market. While Squarespace has whole heartedly embraced all things Apple (at least as far as the iPhone and iPod Touch go), they have shown little interest in developing an Android app (despite the cries for one in their forums).

Currently there are only two iPad blogging apps available (WordPress and BlogPress) which allow bloggers to post upon WordPress, Blogger and MovableType (with limited support for Typepad, LiveJournal and Drupal).

Hopefully Squarespace considers creating an iPad app, as it could help their company become relevant outside of the geek bubble (as most users have only heard of WordPress and Blogger).

Cloaking Hack Puts Spam In Your WordPress Search Engine Results

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • Since some days a rather nasty hack has been going round in the WordPress community. I actually noticed it myself not that long when I googled for ‘Chris Pearson‘ and what I saw in the results was… shall we say ‘interesting’?

Prozac, Levitra, Lexapro? Had Chris sold the ‘Best Damn Blog on the Planet’, AKA Pearsonified? I went to check out Chris’ blog but no. No Prozac, Levitra or anything else of suspicious nature to be found there. Just your regular well-tuned Pearson content. I even looked in the source code and a quick search for known brands ended empty. I left again, having long forgotten already why I googled Chris in the first place.

Now it seems though that this hack is making the rounds and becoming more and more popular. Leland Fiegel from Themelab first reported about it on first reported about it on the Themelab blog, more than a month ago already. Afterwards the issue was covered over at the WP Tavern forums but no solution has been found so far. Even the WordPress Lead Developer, Mark Jaquith, is left clueless and hopes to solve the issue ASAP.

@Skitzzo if someone has actionable security info, they should notify us. If the hackers got in via WP, the access log should have info. [Mark Jaquith on Twitter]

But the hack continues to grow, infecting more and more blogs. On thousands of blogs.

How can you recognise whether your blog is affected?

One option is to wait for Google to cache your content. Did I say before that Yahoo is also targeted with this cloak hack? If I hadn’t so far, I just did.

The other, and faster, way is to use Google’s own Fetch as Googlebot tool. This tool allows you to view how the Google crawlers see your site. Your site must therefor be added to your Google Webmaster Tools account and then you can find it under Labs for every site. In the video below, by Leland Fiegel from Themelab, you can see what the hack does to infected sites.

The Ten Steps To Arranging and Writing a Killer Guest Post

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • Killer guest postThis is a guest post is by Ann Smarty, founder of a community of guest bloggers: My Blog Guest.

To me, guest posting has been by far the most effective free way to promote a resource (as well as my brand). That wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that everything I have ever achieved in my online career was due to my guest posts.

I wouldn’t like anyone to think about guest posting as a link building (or SEO) tool though. There is much more behind the tactic. It builds long-term contacts, exposes your resources to a wide interested audience, promotes your brand and expertise, and many more.

But yes, it takes much time and effort and is only effective when taken seriously. So the aim of this post is to actually describe this serious approach to guest blogging step by step – to make sure the tactic works for you.

Step 1: Search for guest posting opportunities

Unless you are about to start guest posting on a weekly basis, spotting a promising guest posting opportunity shouldn’t be a problem for you. Most niches have high-profile blogs that are known for accepting guest posts (and frequently featuring them).

For social-media-relates topics this is Mashable, for productivity it’s Lifehack, for copywriting it’s CopyBlogger, etc. Arranging a post at such a busy places is not an easy task, but the outcome is amazing, so you should give it a try.

If you need more guest posting opportunities than you are already aware of, go search Google or join my forum My Blog Guest (which unites guest authors with bloggers interested in free quality content).

Step 2: Browse and read the blog

Now you need to get the feeling of what gets published and what gets popular on the blog you plan to guest post for. The first thing to do is to browse the blog, read what you see and drop some smart comments.

To see what seems to be most appreciated by the blog audience you may need some simple tools, like:

Topsy that shows the most Tweeted posts from any domain. Just type site:domain.com and then click through Relevance:

    Topsy popular posts

Delicious URL search will help you understand what users associate the blog with. It shows which tags people use to bookmark the home page. These tags also reflect the readers’ favorite topics as well expectations.

    Delicious URL search

Step 3: Brainstorm a killer post idea

Now that you know a bit about what people like to read about at the target blog, you are ready to brainstorm a good post idea.

Here is my personal advice for you:

Yes, you need to know what goes well on that blog but no, you don’t need to amend your unique style. Blog what you are good at, don’t ever try to appeal too much. Be yourself. Remember that by accepting a guest post, the blog owner hopes to breathe some fresh air into his resource: he looks for your unique voice, not for something he has already (successfully) done on his site.

Step 4: Create a good email pitch

This is a very important step because it actually determines if the guest post is going to be arranged. So don’t screw up.

People have various approaches and after some time you’ll be able to work out your own. Here’s what usually works for me:

    • I am always brief and personalized. I always take time to find the blogger’s name before trying to contact him;
    • I mention my post idea and add why I think it will do well on the blog;
    • I link to a couple of my previous posts to show my style;
    • I never include too many links (as the message with lots of URLs may end up in the spam box).

Step 5: Work on the post

This step is the clearest one. Just grab a cup of coffee and write a good post. Make it unique and well, awesome.

Remember that the blogger doesn’t asks for anything in return for exposing your brand to his audience and linking to your resource. All he needs is great content.

With that in mind, just do as good as you can. And even better.

Step 6: Link to the related posts from the same blog

This is just the way to be polite and show the blogger you read him. This effort will be highly appreciated, trust me.

Just take an effort to do some searching to link to previously published articles from within your context.

Step 7: Work on the post images

Most blogs have some long-adopted style of decorating published posts to grab readers’ attention and visualize the article content. Some of them prefer long horizontal images on top of the actual content. Others add a small introductory image aligned to the left or to the right.

It is easy to spot the style and adopt it to the post you are working on. Like linking to the previously published posts, this will tell the blogger that you care about his resource and take the guest opportunity seriously – which means better chances that your post gets approved.

    Killer guest post: images

Besides, in case you are making any screenshots, make them relevant to the current blog you are writing for.

    Step 8: Work on formatting

Good clear formatting means less time required to edit and upload the post – which also means better approval rate and faster publishing. And it won’t take you too much time.

What I usually make sure to do:

    • See the blog’s heading style and use it for my post (this usually goes about whether the site uses H2 or H3 tags for subheadings);
    • Create a clean HTML document (that can be easily copy-pasted to WordPress editor unlike the text from Word doc, for example, that usually forces some weird formatting issues);
    • Proof read again and again until I learn the copy by heart.

Step 9: Don’t send the post immediately after writing

It is a wise idea to sleep on it. In the morning, go through it again and only then send it.

This fresh look will help you find some mistakes and fine-tune your style.

    Step 10: Wait

Most popular blogs have busy schedules, so don’t be offended if your post doesn’t go live at once. I know that after you work hard on the post, you may get overly anxious about the feedback but you may need to wait.

I usually wait for the reply no more than 1 week, then I send a notice tp the blog owner saying that if I don’t get a reply in the next couple of days, I will need to publish the post elsewhere.

    Extra steps: Get involved

Now that your post actually goes live, there is no reason to think the job is done. Check back often, subscribe to comments and answer every single one posted, tweet and share the post. Remember, the better the post does, the more exposure you get!

    Happy guest posting!

The guest post is by Ann Smarty, who is a strong believer in guest posting. If you love or plan guest blogging, join Ann’s community of guest bloggers: My Blog Guest, which is basically a forum where people meet to exchange post and promote each other’s content.

iPad Blogging Now Possible (Thanks To WordPress And BlogPress)

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • With the iPad being released to the masses tomorrow, it looks like WordPress and BlogPress have updated their respective apps in order to make them iPad compatible.

Since very few people (let alone bloggers) have an iPad, WordPress was able to release a statement, as well as a few iPad screen shots (like the one above).

(WordPress iPhone Blog) So what’s new for the iPad? In order to ensure that using WordPress on your iPad would be a great experience from day one, we decided not to add any new features. Nada. This release is all about taking advantage of a huge 9.7″ touchscreen. Writing and editing posts is far easier than before. Skimming through your comments and moderating them is far faster than before. And using the app is simply more beautiful than before.

Making the iPhone app compatible with the iPad should help increase WordPress’s popularity on the mobile front, as the blogging company already has created mobile apps for Blackberry smartphones, as well as Android.

BlogPress (which supports WordPress, MovableType and Blogger) has also optimized their iPhone app for the iPad, although they have not released an official statement online (they did however mention it being iPad friendly in the app store).

Despite the limitations of blogging on the iPad (at least on the WordPress iPad app), bloggers may prefer to write posts upon Apple’s latest device due to the larger screen which makes the iPad the perfect tool when it comes to researching topics.

Other blogging companies have yet to announce any major plans to adapt their iPhone apps (in order to become iPad friendly), although we will probably see more join in over the next few weeks.

Blogger Improves Photo Uploading (Catches Up To WordPress)

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • It looks like the boys and girls at Google have just enabled multiple photo uploading for Blogger fans via flash, as well as the ability to pull images from their multimedia gallery on Picasa.

(Blogger In Draft Blog) We recently updated the photo uploading interface in Blogger in Draft’s post editor with a few new features:

Multiple photo upload. If you have Flash installed, you can select multiple photos at a time in the file picker, and all of them will get uploaded at once.

Picasa Web Albums integration. You can now select from any of the images in your Picasa Web photo albums and insert them into your posts.

The ability to post images from your Picasa gallery is a feature long overdue, although it does help make blogger more competitive against rivals like WordPress.com and Typepad.

This latest move should help compliment Blogger’s launch of blog themes and pages, which should make the platform more appealing for serious bloggers.

This feature is currently only available upon Blogger in Draft (which is Google’s eternal beta for Blogger which users can access by visiting draft.blogger.com in their browser.

News Flash: Tumblr Has A Business Plan. Or At Least Something To Sell.

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • Tumblr, the hot, New York based, free blogging platform on crack which was founded in 2007 by David Karp, and has long been mocked for having no business strategy at all, actually has a ‘business plan’.

A business plan other than being the nicest platform, hosting the hippest bloggers and designers, and offering most features of all freely available blog platforms. To be honest with you I might have forgotten to check the total validity of the ‘most features’ statement, but if tumblr doesn’t offer most features, at least the team has the nicest features page of all platforms. That’s a valid argument, right?

Times have changed and since today you will not be able, or allowed even, anymore to mock tumblr as the perfect poster boy of the ‘Bubble in Tech’ and our throw-away consumerist behaviour, because… wait for it… yes, Tumblr does actually have a business plan. Of course I use the term ‘business plan’ loosely here and it might be more appropriate to call it ’something which should at least bring money in the account and finance the next free bar Tumblr SXSWi party‘.

Today the startup announced the introduction of premium themes, AKA as ‘paid themes’.

These Premium Themes display an impeccable aesthetic, attention to detail, and occasionally a specialization (galleries, long text, band sites, business sites, etc.).

They cost between $9 and $49 (most of which goes right into the pockets of the brilliant designers behind them) and are a shining addition to the 350+ beautiful free themes already available.

We’re thrilled that these designers already include the outrageously talented Matthew Buchanan, Jarred Bishop, Mike Harding, MetaLab, Sleepover SF, Peter Vidani, and WooThemes. Thank you!

What does this mean for the user? Nothing really, other than that 13 themes have been added to the already large Tumblr Theme Garden and that you’ll have to pay between $9 and $49 to use any of these themes. Alternatively you can still design your own theme or grab one of the 337+ other free and mostly excellent themes. Fred Wilson surely laughing all the way home about this move.

5 Tips to Ensure Your Blog is Suitable for Mobiles

April 11, 2010 in Make money by admin

  • This is a guest post by Tom Walker, who blogs at The CreativeCloud.

So you have created a fantastic blog that you are passionate about and your traffic is increasing each and every day. Congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of blogging! Now you need to ask yourself a very important question: can your blog successfully reach the unlimited number of potential visitors that are now using their mobiles to search online?

I used the word ‘successfully’ because your blog may still show up in a mobile search and reach potential mobile visitors, however the success of this will depend on how well your site appears on their somewhat cramped mobile screen and how user friendly it is at that size. People are impatient and often time-poor these days, and if they don’t find what they are looking for in an instant, they will simply go to a different site that does. You may have the best blog in the world, but if it is not mobile friendly, then you will be unable to convert potential visitors into subscribers and you will be missing out on the increasing number of people who use a mobile device as their primary means of browsing the internet.

Don’t fall behind your competition – lead the way! Here are some useful tips to help get your blog ready for the long term trend towards mobility.

    1. Optimize Graphics

If you want your blog to appear on a mobile screen within seconds, it is crucial to consider the page size and graphics. Although most blog posts mainly consist of text, many do have a number of images as well. If your pages are bogged down with images they will take a lot longer to open, especially if they aren’t optimised, and this will cause you to lose quality traffic as the viewer will simply move on out of boredom. This doesn’t mean you need to delete the images you already have on your blog, you simply need to choose a service or plugin that will remove the images when your blog is viewed in the mobile form or, alternatively, highly optimise what images you have on your blog.

    2. Review Your Blog’s Content

When you think about the amount of text visible on a large desktop or laptop screen and then compare that to the size of a mobile screen, it is obvious that an entire post when viewed on a mobile device will involve scrolling through numerous pages. This may not be a problem for some, or it may not be possible, or worthwhile, to edit some of your posts. However, if you have reviewed your content and have found that it is not as concise as it could be, consider making some changes to trim back the size of your posts. These small changes will improve the accessibility of your blog and make it much more mobile friendly.

    3. Consistency of Theme

Whether your blog is being viewed on a PC, mobile or any other device, it is important that the basic elements of your brand identity are carried across no matter what version of the site is being viewed. It is this consistency that will help build the brand and authority of your blog, regardless of the device used, and will also make it a lot easier for interested viewers to find the information they are looking for.

    4. Blogging Platform

Wordpress and Blogger are the two most popular blogging platforms, but unfortunately neither offers the inbuilt capability for automatic mobile detection. However, if you are using Wordpress as your blogging platform then you can easily add a plugin to detect what device is being used to browse your site and adjust its appearance accordingly.

    5. Create a Dynamic Mobile Version

If adding mobile device detection isn’t an option then take advantage of one of the dedicated services that will serve up a mobile-friendly version for people browsing on iPhones and other devices with small screens and slower connections. There are some good ones, freely available to bloggers around the world, and they include:

Have a look at the specific features offered by each tool to find the one that will suit you the best. Some will be easier to customize than others and some will allow you greater control over creativity and your blogs mobile appearance. If you are looking to get your blog mobile immediately and you are not too fussed with creating your own look, then it might be an idea to choose the Google Mobile Optimizer.
